🛠️ A Highboy History Lesson

Before the F-250 became just another badge on a tailgate, it was a purpose-built beast — especially the Highboy. The term “Highboy” wasn’t official Ford lingo, but over time enthusiasts began using it to describe the taller stance of 4x4 F-250s built between 1967 and 1977.5.

These early trucks rode high thanks to:

• Factory front lift blocks

• Divorced transfer cases

• Narrower frame rail spacing

• Leaf spring suspension front and rear

In a world before coil springs and computer-controlled 4WD systems, this was pure mechanical grit — made to tow, plow, and crawl wherever duty called.

📦 What You Got in ‘72

The 1972 F-250 Highboy was the last of the fifth-generation F-series trucks (1967–1972), and arguably one of the cleanest-looking pickups Ford ever built.

🔧 Engine Options:

• 240ci or 300ci Inline-6 (basic but bulletproof)

• 360ci and 390ci FE V8s (torque monsters)

• Some even swapped in 428s or 460s later — for those who believe in overkill.

⚙️ Drivetrain:

• NP435 4-speed manual transmission

• Divorced Dana 24 or NP205 transfer case

• Closed knuckle Dana 44 front axle

• Dana 60 rear axle, full-float and ready for abuse

🛻 Trim & Features:

• Base, Custom, Sport Custom, and Ranger trims

• Optional two-tone paint, bed rails, toolbox beds, and sliding rear windows

• AM radio (if you were lucky)

• Power brakes and power steering available — but not always included

These trucks were raw. No traction control, no ABS, no sensors to bail you out. Just steel, gears, and the driver’s instinct.
